Grad Prep FAQs

What is the Graduate Preparation Program?

The Graduate Preparation Program is for students who want to enter graduate programs at Eastern Washington University. It is an alternative to the TOEFL admission requirement. It provides a bridge to academic studies at the graduate level. It includes both content courses in the student’s field of study and English-language support classes.

How long is the Graduate Preparation Program?

The program is intended for a two quarter period.

How many courses will I take in my field of study?

Each quarter, students will take about 8 credits of coursework in their field of study plus 8 credits of English-language support classes.

How can I move from the Graduate Preparation Program to fulltime graduate studies?

Students who succeed in both their content coursework and their English-language support classes can be fully admitted to graduate programs, as long as they have already met all of the other academic requirements for graduate admission.

How do I decide which courses to take in my field of study?

Graduate advisors will determine the coursework.

Does credit earned in the Graduate Preparation Program count towards my degree?

In some programs, up to 12 credits of course work in the field of study may be transferred into the graduate program. Check with your advisor.

What is covered in the language support classes?

During the first quarter the English-language support classes focus on Advanced Writing and Grammar, with an emphasis on editing, and Current Events and Issues. During the second quarter the English-language support classes cover the Advanced Research Paper Writing and Presentation Skills.

What score do I need to pass into fulltime graduate studies?

At the end of each quarter the student will be evaluated by both departmental faculty and ELI faculty. The students must pass the content courses with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 and must receive a “good” or “excellent” rating in the English-language support classes.

Do I need a TOEFL or IELTS score to enter the Graduate Preparation Program?

No. Students who are accepted by their graduate program can enter ELI, proceed through the Advanced Level 5, and then be recommended into the Graduate Preparation Program.

What if I do have a TOEFL or IELTS score?

If your TOEFL score is between 525-550 PBT/71-79 iBT or your IELTS score is between 6.0-6.5, you can apply directly to the EWU Graduate School and to the Graduate Preparation Program. A graduate advisor will decide on the coursework.
