Placement and Testing Apply to ELI!

Entry Student Placement Testing

At entry students are tested into combined skill areas of reading, writing, grammar, and listening and conversation. The skill levels may vary for each student depending on proficiency in that skill, that is, the placement is individualized and not done as a block.

Placement tests consist of:

  • a 10-minute oral interview;
  • a 15-minute dictation test
  • a 45-minute writing sample;
  • a 60-minute multiple choice reading test.

Students take the placement test only once upon entering the program. Once in the program, students advance to the next level based on their performance in their classes. Completing Level 5 fulfills the EWU undergradute English proficiency requirements.
