Psychology & Science in Literature, History, and Practice in Paris, France and London, England

March 20 through April 1, 2017

Learn about historical theories and influences involved in the development of medical and psychological literature, science, and practice. After participating in either the English, History, or Psychology prerequisite course, students will travel on a two-week trip to London and Paris during finals week and spring break 2017*. Students and faculty will visit various sites in these two iconic cities to more deeply understand the progression of psychological science from the different disciplinary perspectives. There will be a particular focus on the Victorian Period. The respective EWU course and study abroad program fulfill major and minor requirements specific to the disciplines listed above.

*CISabroad will be the acting agent and logistics supervisor for the program. An on-site representative for CISabroad will accompany the group throughout the duration of the program.

Program Costs and Features

$3,917 Course Fee

Included in course fee: Group travel from Spokane, WA to London and Paris; Accommodations in shared occupancy hotels; Breakfast provided daily; Group welcome and farewell dinners; Coach bus and public transportation as well as Eurostar train travel from London to Paris; CISI health insurance and liability coverage; All course related excursions and entrance fees; and unlimited travel cards in zones 1-2 in London. Gratuities to bus drivers, guides.

Exclusions: additional meals not listed (students should plan to allow for $40 per day for food); optional entertainment and excursions not listed in itinerary; excess baggage fees; passport and /or visa expenses; mobile phone with international calling plan; laundry expenses.

Registration Procedure

Students must register in one of the pre-requisite courses in either English, History, or Psychology for Winter term. Financial Aid is available for EWU students.  A non-refundable payment of $350 towards the program fee is due October 24, 2016. All students should plan to have a passport valid for travel by January 1, 2017. Funding is available for passport costs through The Fund a Passport Grant. Students must work with the Study Abroad Resource Center to provide the required travel documentation for the program. Sunday, March 19, 2017 – Group Flight from Spokane to London

Day 1: London

Monday, March 20, 2017 

Morning: Arrive in London, meet the CIS On-Site Coordinator at the airport and transfer to accommodations

Afternoon: Spend the day taking a tour of the city, including a bus tour of some of the city’s most historic sites as well as a boat tour down the River Thames

Evening: Welcome dinner and CISabroad orientation

Day 2: London

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 

Morning: An excursion to the Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum

Afternoon: Free time to explore with La Vida Local cultural activity suggestions available from CISabroad Onsite Program Coordinator (OPC)

Day 3: London

Wednesday, March 22 

Morning: A visit to the museum at St. Guy’s Hospital & Operating Theatre, the oldest in Europe, for a guided tour

Afternoon: A visit to the Sigmund Freud Museum and Home

Evening: See a show at the Victorian Theatre, actual date pending schedule and availability

Day 4: London

Thursday, March 23, 2017 

Day: An excursion to Kent, site of Charles Darwin’s former home, with a visit to the Bethlem Royal Hospital on the way back to visit the Museum of the Mind

Friday, March 24, 2017 

Morning: A visit to the Science Museum in London

Afternoon: Visit the Charles Dickens Museum

Evening: Head to London’s East End for a Jack the Ripper tour

Saturday, March 25, 2017 

Day: Free day to do some last minute exploration of the city with La Vida Local cultural activity suggestions available from CISabroad OPC

Sunday, March 26, 2017

Morning: Check out of accommodations and transfer to Paris, France via Eurostar Train. Upon arrival, check into accommodations

Afternoon: Head out for a tour of the city, including a Bateaux Mouches river tour and a stop at the Eiffel Tower

Day 8: Paris

Morning: Continue your tour of the city with visits to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Sainte-Chapelle, and the Musee d’Orsay

Afternoon: Free time to explore the city with La Vida Local cultural activity suggestions available from CISabroad OPC

Day 9: Paris

Tuesday, March 28, 2017 

Day: Continue visiting some of the most iconic sites in Paris, including trips to the Louvre and Musée Dupuytren

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 

Day: Take an excursion to two of Paris’ most historic hospitals, The Pitié-Salêtrière Hospital and The Bicêtre Hospital (to be arranged by EWU faculty)
