Gender and Sexuality in Asia

Join EWU professors from Women's and Gender Studies and Anthropology in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand. This trip is an opportunity to experience gender and LGBTQ issues from the Thai perspective.

Program Details:

  • Three course options for fall 2018 with up to 5 EWU credits.
  • Travel December 7-16, 2018.

Program Cost:

  • $3,385 for course and trip
  • Cost includes tuition for EWU course; round-trip group airfare from Spokane to Chiang Mai, Thailand; shared occupancy housing in hotels; breakfasts and some group meals; all excursions; in-country transportation (coach bus or public transport); CISabroad on-site program coordinator.


Dec. 6, 2018 - Travel to Thailand

Friday, Dec. 7 - Arrive in Chiang Mai, meet CISabroad director and program coordinator. Transfer to accomodations and check in. Weclome dinner for group provided.

Saturday, Dec. 8 - CIS Health and Safety Orientation, Thai Cultural Values training. Group Lunch provided. Afternoon: orientation to the Old City by tuk tuk or songtaew with CIS site Director.

Sunday, Dec. 9- Thai cooking class, visit market to learn about traditional Thai ingredients and learn to make several different dishes.

Monday, Dec. 10- Morning Organizational Visit. Afternoon Organizational Visit

Tuesday, Dec. 11- Travel to Bangkok. Transport to hotel in Bangkok. Neighborhood walking tour. Free time.

Wednesday, Dec. 12- Morning Organizational Visit. Afternoon Organizational Visit

Thursday, Dec. 13 - Bangkok city tour. Visit Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho. Visit Siam.

Friday, Dec. 14 - Morning Organizational Visit. Afternoon Organizational Visit.

Saturday, Dec. 15 - Organizational Visits and afternoon free time. Group Farewell dinner at Cabbages and Condoms.

Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018 - Departure

How to sign up:

(1) Apply for this Faculty-Led Program.

(2) Enroll in one of three fall 2018 courses by contacting the instructor:

WMST 326 (5 cr.) Genders, Sexualities, and Bodies:  Contact Prof. Willis

WMST 319 (5 cr.) LGBTQ+ Studies: Contact Prof. Marinucci

ANTH 432 (4 cr.) Anthropology of Gender: Contact Prof. Smith

(3) Pay $350 deposit in early September. Deposit goes towards the total program cost of $3,385.

Financial Aid may apply towards the cost of the trip. If you will be using financial aid to cover costs, you will meet with Megan Abbey in Office of Global Initiatives to complete a budget sheet and update your fall cost of attendance.
